On November 2nd, Bare Hands Gallery hosts its annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. It is a cultural fusion of the indigenous Central American festival which honors the dead (in the same sense that we celebrate Samhain) and the creative expression of regional Southern artists. Thousands of people attend to view the altars, shrines and installations, to eat and drink, to participate in the kids crafts, to watch dance and fire performances and listen to some great Hispanic/American music (in the past including Del Castillo, Flaco Jiménez, Los Pinkys and Desafio).
BB&C has made generous donations to the event including providing incense and use of tables. And, MCP community members have created altars and volunteered their time to the event. You can be involved too. There’s a lot of work that goes into creating and installing decorations – its a fun group of people to be involved with. We’ll post scheduled work days here (see the end of this post) and you can also visit the gallery website: www.barehandsgallery.org There you can also find photos and videos of past years events.
ALTAR MAKING CLASS
For MCP’s October 8th meeting, Salix and I will be teaching a Dia de los Muertos-styled altar making class. Start thinking about what departed friend or loved one you’d like to commemorate and gather photographs and representations together. Instead of using original (especially irreplaceable) photographs, make oversized color copies to use. We’ll have about 30 cigar boxes to use on a first come first serve basis (and to give you an idea of size and scale). If you have other crafty goodness, we invite you to bring that as well.
Typical colors are like our harvest festivals, orange, gold and red – but feel free to use other bold Mexicano colors as well. Marigolds, Monarch Butterflies and Skulls (although a little more whimsical than gothy) are icons frequently seen.
Look forward to seeing you at MCP on Oct. 8th and at Bare Hands Gallery this month.

Bare Hands schedule:
We had a great weekend at BH – a day long fiber guild workshop and a beautiful wedding reception for Wendi Flowers & Shea Goodwin! Now it is time to get back to papier-mache and Day of the Dead…Look for crew workday schedules next week.
1. Papier-mâché Workdays
Sundays, October 3, 10 & 17, Noon – 4pm. Wendy J. will also be in this Saturday, Oct 2 from noon – 2pm decorating masks and small altar pieces, if you want to join her.
Workdays are free because they are, well, workdays. If you are bringing children who are under the age of 14, let us know so we can have a project for them. We are now at the phase where the workdays are geared more for adults, but we will gladly make accommodations for young children, if we have a heads up.
Come build skull masks and maybe patch up our old Frida & Diego! Then decorate a mask for yourself and some for Bare Hands to sell. We will also make 150 small masks for children to decorate at the festival. Big thanks to Barbara, Becky & Betty Lawson and Craig Legg for running these workdays August – October!! Wear clothes & shoes that can get messy or bring an apron & shoe covers. Bring your stamina, creativity & a snack. We provide supplies and soft drinks.
2. Sugar Skull Decorating #5 – please reserve a spot for this one ahead of time
This week – Thursday, Sept 30th – 6pm – 8pm – Free Friends & Family Sugar Skull Night
We have colored to foil make our skulls even more authentic! The foil makes great crowns, eyes & name plates.
Wear get-messy clothes or an apron. Bring a basket or box (at least 6″x6″x9″deep) to take your skull home. Once it is fully dry it does not need to be sealed up or refrigerated, just kept in a cool dry place. If your skull will be in remembrance of a specific person, you might want to bring tiny plastic items to add to the royal icing decoration that remind you of that person – such as a hat, glasses, cigarette, jewelry.
We provide you with an extra large size full skull (about the size of a softball), royal icing, colored foil, inspiration and encouragement.
3. Memorial Altar Making #4 – tba
