Rules For Attending a Hallowed Oaks Event

Hallowed Oaks Grove welcomes you to our event and we look forward to
meeting you! We have a few rules for attendees, basically just common
courtesies. As our grove has become more and more successful and our
numbers have grown, it has become necessary to formally set down some
rules that we previously had no need to state. As always, we love
having people come and try to show the warmest hospitality we
can. Please make sure that you and any guests that you invite are
familiar with these rule.

Thanks,
Hallowed Oaks Grove

1) Guests: Please feel free to bring guests. However if you bring
guests you are responsible for their behavior. As they may not have
access to this list, make sure that they are aware of the rules.

2) Firewood: We view the fire as part of our festival ritual. The
fire is a sacrifice to the gods and a warming gift to the grove and
it’s guest. it is not just polite to bring firewood, it is part of
the celebration. Please do your part and bring at least a few pieces
of firewood for the fire. This is getting very expensive for some of
us. In a similar vein, do not put any wood in the fire. There will
be a few fire tenders appointed by the leadership, they are in charge
of rationing what we have and only they should put wood into the fire.

3) Feast: If you want to eat with us, then you need to bring food!
The feast is a potluck dinner and part of ritual, a symbolic coming
together as a community. It is however, a potluck feast, not a grove
provided feast. If you would like to be included in this part of
ritual (and eat some really good food!), then you must contribute a
dish to the feast. The normal rule of thumb for a potluck feast is to
bring twice the amount of food that you and your party will consume.
That does not mean twice the amount of potato salad that you would eat
(if you brought potato salad) but twice the total amount of food that
you intend to consume. This makes sure that there is plenty for
everyone and enough for people to get a taste of everything. We put
no restrictions on what you bring, but we prefer it to be homemade.
We do not discriminate against people who may have fallen on hard
times. If you cannot afford to bring a dish, feel free to contact a
grove member and we can arrange for you to substitute trash duty, dish
washing, etc.

4) Second helpings or big first helpings: There will be anywhere
from 20 to 60 people wanting to eat. Please consider this when you
get your first helping, and don’t go for seconds until the
announcement is made that everyone has eaten.

5) Coolers/Refrigerators: The YO in BYOB is ‘Your Own’! Do not go
into someone else’s cooler or refrigerator and take something without
asking first! Also remember that permission to take one beer or girly
drink out of someone’s cooler is not permission to take a second. Ask
each time and every time. This is just common courtesy.

6) Camping chairs: Please bring a camping chair or something to sit
on, there may be a few extras or that empty chair may be the one
someone else brought so they would have a place to sit.

7) Tables: There will be a table or maybe two designated for potluck
dishes. The other tables are brought by people who probably intend to
use them to cook food for you. They might also have brought it for
gaming or crafts or a workshop. Either way, with the exception of
your covered dish on the feast table, do not put things on a table
that does not belong to you.

8) Ritual: Please be silent once we have started the procession,
whether you are watching or participating. We welcome people to
participate and we welcome people to watch if they feel more
comfortable. You may set your chair just outside the ritual area if
you like so that you can see and hear. Just remember that we can see
and hear also. If you are feeling conversational please make sure you
are out of earshot.

9) Cellphones: Make sure all cell phones are OFF before the ritual
starts. Cell phones on vibrate can still be heard by those around
them. The leadership understands that there are people with sick
relatives in the hospital, people who work in emergency services and
the like. If you must have your cellphone on vibrate, talk to one of
the group leaders and we can make special arrangements for you.

9) Private vs. Public venues: Quite often these events are held at private homes.  Please be aware of any indoor pets that may not be allowed outside.  Be considerate of any “house” rules, such as not smoking inside.  Stay in the “public” areas.  Please do not enter closed rooms without permission.

Day of the Dead and Altar Making Class in Birmingham

I’m gonna be there!  This was taken from the MCP (Magick City Pagans) forum.

http://magickcitypagans.org/forums/index.php?topic=5058.0

www.barehandsgallery.org

On November 2nd, Bare Hands Gallery hosts its annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. It is a cultural fusion of the indigenous Central American festival which honors the dead (in the same sense that we celebrate Samhain) and the creative expression of regional Southern artists. Thousands of people attend to view the altars, shrines and installations, to eat and drink, to participate in the kids crafts, to watch dance and fire performances and listen to some great Hispanic/American music (in the past including Del Castillo, Flaco Jiménez, Los Pinkys and Desafio).

BB&C has made generous donations to the event including providing incense and use of tables. And, MCP community members have created altars and volunteered their time to the event. You can be involved too. There’s a lot of work that goes into creating and installing decorations – its a fun group of people to be involved with. We’ll post scheduled work days here (see the end of this post) and you can also visit the gallery website: www.barehandsgallery.org There you can also find photos and videos of past years events.

ALTAR MAKING CLASS
For MCP’s October 8th meeting, Salix and I will be teaching a Dia de los Muertos-styled altar making class. Start thinking about what departed friend or loved one you’d like to commemorate and gather photographs and representations together. Instead of using original (especially irreplaceable) photographs, make oversized color copies to use. We’ll have about 30 cigar boxes to use on a first come first serve basis (and to give you an idea of size and scale). If you have other crafty goodness, we invite you to bring that as well.

Typical colors are like our harvest festivals, orange, gold and red – but feel free to use other bold Mexicano colors as well. Marigolds, Monarch Butterflies and Skulls (although a little more whimsical than gothy) are icons frequently seen.

Look forward to seeing you at MCP on Oct. 8th and at Bare Hands Gallery this month.

Bare Hands schedule:

We had a great weekend at BH – a day long fiber guild workshop and a beautiful wedding reception for Wendi Flowers & Shea Goodwin!  Now it is time to get back to papier-mache and Day of the Dead…Look for crew workday schedules next week.

1. Papier-mâché Workdays
Sundays, October 3, 10 & 17,    Noon – 4pm.  Wendy J. will also be in this Saturday, Oct 2 from noon – 2pm decorating masks and small altar pieces, if you want to join her.

Workdays are free because they are, well, workdays.  If you are bringing children who are under the age of 14, let us know so we can have a project for them.  We are now at the phase where the workdays are geared more for adults, but we will gladly make accommodations for young children, if we have a heads up.

Come build skull masks and maybe patch up our old Frida & Diego!  Then decorate a mask for yourself and some for Bare Hands to sell. We will also make 150 small masks for children to decorate at the festival.  Big thanks to Barbara, Becky & Betty Lawson and Craig Legg for running these workdays August – October!!  Wear clothes & shoes that can get messy or bring an apron & shoe covers.  Bring your stamina, creativity & a snack.  We provide supplies and soft drinks.

2.  Sugar Skull Decorating #5 – please reserve a spot for this one ahead of time
This week – Thursday, Sept 30th – 6pm – 8pm – Free Friends & Family Sugar Skull Night

We have colored to foil make our skulls even more authentic!  The foil makes great crowns, eyes & name plates.

Wear get-messy clothes or an apron.  Bring a basket or box (at least 6″x6″x9″deep) to take your skull home.  Once it is fully dry it does not need to be sealed up or refrigerated, just kept in a cool dry place.  If your skull will be in remembrance of a specific person, you might want to bring tiny plastic items to add to the royal icing decoration that remind you of that person – such as a hat, glasses, cigarette, jewelry.

We provide you with an extra large size full skull (about the size of a softball), royal icing, colored foil, inspiration and encouragement.

3.  Memorial Altar Making #4 – tba

Mabon 2010 wrap-up

What a GREAT day!!  It’s taken me a week to wrap my head around how fabulous it was.

First, I want to thank everyone who made it to Birmingham.  Seeing old friends on what I consider “homecoming” made it all the more special to me.  And having new friends stand beside me in ritual was beautiful!  Thank you all again.

The ritual itself was wonderful, full of energy and sincerity.  Robert, I don’t apologize for putting you the spot by asking you to read the omen.  LOL  What could have been a better omen?!  I really felt our offering made a good impression, just watching tehbasket go up in flames so eagerly!  Christy, thank you so much for playing valyrie; you did a great job.   Rest assured, i wll ask you again.  I’m hearing some good feedback so far about the “Down by the Fire to Pray” processional song.  Perhaps we’ll try it again.  I words to fit the Celtic pantheon as well.

The raffle was a great success.   We pulled in $136.00.  Very nice.  I don’t remember iof any announcement was made about where the money would be going, but as tradition with HOG, 10% will go to the Mother Grove and the rest into our own Land Fund.

Feast as always was wonderful.  So much food!  HOG definitely knows how to throw a picnic!

All in all, a most satisfying day!  Spiritually and physically.  I can’t to see you all again at Samhain.

Love you all,

Brenda

Home Shrine Ritual Changes

I’m backing away from using the chanting as a prayer while I do the kindred offerings.  I’m still doing the chant but I added in individual prayers to the kindreds.  That seems to work much better.  I think that I want to move my patron offerings.  I have been making them after the kindred offerings in a style similar to COoR.  This doesn’t make as much sense int his type of ritual.  In the COoR we are sacrificing and inviting the kindreds for the main sacrifice.  Here, they are all the main sacrifice.  I’m already doing a two part sacrifice to he Ancestors.  One for The Mighty Dead and one for The Ancient Wise.  I think the Brid and Mananaan sacrifices should go after the general sacrifice to The Shining Ones.

I also tried adding in a headstand before the pre-ritual mediation to help with my concentration.  I’m not sure that it helped any.  I’ll try it again, though.

Video: Ian Corrigan & Liafal Sing “Ordinary Day”

Two of our ADF clergy and the former bards of ADF performing at the Trillium ADF Festival earlier this year.  I love it when they do this song.  I don’t know what it is about it.  It just really speaks to me.  They do it way better than the original.

Samhain: October 29-31

It’s St. Patrick’s Day for Pagans!  The 2010 Samhain ritual will be on the evening of Saturday, October 30, though this will be a camping even spanning the entire weekend of the 29th through the 31st.  Camping isn’t required but fire=good!  The place is not yet decided.  It hasn’t been discussed yet, but I would like to do something in honor of our founder, Isaac Bonewits who just passed away last month.  More details to come soon.   Start planning your pumpkin carving and your dish for ritual feast!  There will also be groovy things in the raffle.  The grove Samhain weekends are always awesome.  I hope to see lots of old and new friends this year.
